many owners feel this way. here’s how nick turned things around.

There’s nothing worse than feeling like I’m failing the dog I love.

When I first brought Seidon home, I thought it was going to be easy, long walks, adventures, the perfect dog-and-owner bond. But honestly, it was nothing like that.

Seidon was reactive, wired, and full of energy that I just couldn’t control. Walks were stressful battles, and I felt like I was constantly failing him.

I kept asking myself, “Am I just not cut out for this?”

But the truth is, his behaviour wasn’t just “bad dog” stuff. It was his instincts screaming out, the very drives he was bred for, pushing him to chase, hunt, bark, and stay on high alert all the time. That constant tension inside him wasn’t just annoying, it was exhausting for both of us.

I wasn’t dealing with stubbornness or disobedience. I was dealing with deep-rooted needs that weren’t being met, things like mental stimulation, consistent structure, a clear sense of purpose, and crucially, enough sleep and rest to recharge.

Ignoring these needs only made things worse.

It wasn’t just the walks. The stress spilled into every part of my life. I’d lie awake at night worrying about how to keep him calm, and during the day, I felt isolated, like I was the only one struggling with a dog who just wouldn’t chill.

I tried everything, treats, commands, distractions and every tool known to man,  but nothing worked.

The more I fought against Seidon’s instincts, the worse things got. I felt like I was pushing him away instead of building that connection I wanted.

Then, I had a breakthrough. Instead of trying to fix what I thought was “bad” behaviour, I started working with Seidon’s natural instincts, really understanding the deeper why behind what he was doing. Once I managed his drive and gave him the right outlets, everything began to change.

Slowly but surely, walks became calmer, Seidon grew more confident, and the constant stress started to fade. We reconnected in a way I didn’t think was possible.

That experience changed everything for me, and it’s exactly why I created Calm By Nature. I want you to know you’re not alone, and that if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed, there is a way forward.

A way to get calm, confident dogs without burning out or losing your bond.

what owners like you are saying

Kip went from anxious and reactive…
…to walking calmly through busy town centres and chilling on boat rides.

"We’d tried other trainers with no luck. Kip was anxious, reactive, and we felt totally lost.

After just one session with Nick, everything made sense. We finally understood why Kip behaved the way he did, and what to do about it.

Now? He walks calmly off-lead, handles busy towns with ease, and even came on holiday with us to the Lakes.

Working with Bear Basics changed everything."

hannah & kip (rescue labrador)

Stuck in a rut, no real progress with previous trainer…
…Making big changes and loving the process, even from a distance

“I’d only used positive reinforcement before, so I was nervous to try something new, but Nick’s approach is exactly what I’d been looking for. It’s clear, supportive and still very positive!

We’re doing the Online mentoring, and it works so well.

I just wish we’d started sooner."

Struggling with recall, pulling on the lead and reacting to other dogs…
…More control, better communication, and walks that actually feel enjoyable

“In just a month of 1:1s, everything started to change. Nick gave us clear instructions and the WhatsApp support in between made all the difference. Margot’s recall, lead walking, and reactivity have massively improved!”

carrie & margot (cocker spaniel)

18 months of trial and error with no progress, limited life, daily stress…
…Freedom, confidence, and a dog who can now walk, play and cope

“We wasted 18 months with trainers who didn’t understand reactivity. Nothing worked, and life felt really limited.

Now, I can take Eric anywhere. He can heel walk, play, and engage in a group of dogs, something I never thought I’d see. Bear Basics gave us back our freedom, and I’m genuinely excited about what’s ahead.”

here’s what changes once you stop winging it and start with a real plan

R6II5363.jpg
Pine tree.png

You stop guessing and start making progress, because you actually know what you're doing and why it’s working

Pine tree.png

Your dog finally understands what you’re asking, because you’re both speaking the same language

Pine tree.png

Walks become less like a battle and more like a breather (imagine actually enjoying them again)

Pine tree.png

The big stuff like recall and loose lead starts falling into place because you're working with your dog, not against them

Pine tree.png

You stop relying on treats or toys to get attention, and start building real engagement that actually lasts

Pine tree.png

You understand the why behind the behaviour, so even when something new pops up, you know exactly how to handle it

Pine tree.png

Life gets calmer at home too, your dog can switch off, settle, and you’re not on edge all the time

Pine tree.png

You get to show up for your dog in a way that feels good, confident, clear, and in control (even on the bad days)

Pine tree.png

The overwhelm lifts. The pressure eases. You’ve got a system that makes sense and support that helps

imagine being the owner everyone asks, “how did you do that?” or hearing “i wish my dog was like yours.”

what our clients say

we can't recommend them enough

"As first time dog owners, we knew when we got our working cocker spaniel (Rudy) that a lot of training would be needed. After finding Bear Basics online, we booked in for a puppy training day where Rudy got taught the fundamentals of obedience and engagement, as well as how to switch off and settle through place training (worth every penny just for this!). Rudy also has a very high prey drive and a strong desire to work, which results in a lot of lead pulling, and massive overstimulation outdoors. We booked in a follow-up session to work solely on this, and in the last 2 months we have seen a complete transformation. Nick taught us the value of playing outside with your dog, getting Rudy to sit and do nothing, the art of lead pressure, and how to properly reward him when he has done something good. As a result he is much calmer on a walk, and although he still has his moments, he is getting better every single day. We can’t recommend Bear Basics enough, as Nick is always on hand to answer any questions we may have, resulting in our walks being so much more fun and enjoyable."
